I think Todangst's made-up conversation actually would have been quite a bit shorter. I can't imagine the student would have the gall to present the same fallicy over and over in front of the whole class like that. I did enjoy the more realistic representation of a student-teacher relationship and an educational environment, though. The theist's representation of the conversation is a total strawman. _________________ "If we long to believe that the stars rise and set for us, that we are the reason there is a Universe, does science do us a disservice in deflating our conceits?"

But that's exactly what they do. You can answer objection after objection and they act like you never said anything. _________________ K Michau

He would have written a 20,000 word essay on that comment just to show you how it's wrong. _________________ Namaste,

To be perfectly frank, he's a smart guy and I have always admired that. However, he's kinda emotional and tends to almost randomly snap on people. We were good friends for a few years, and then one day he decided (pretty much out of no where) that I was a troll and he started freaking out on me. He wasn't just flipping out a little, I mean he was almost totally off the deep end. I wondered if the guy was actually having a nervous break down. A couple others had a similar experience. Some of them are still here, and they're good people. I'll let them name themselves if they want to.
As much as I didn't want to, I had to put todangst on Ignore.
It's a really weird thing when a "friend" just flips out on you one day. To this day, I still don't get it. _________________ Namaste,

| I think he stopped because he got banned for acouple days, he was kind of emotional or at least easily made angry or annoyed or something, like CET says. Plus then this site changed and a lot of people stopped posting anyway. |

If only that were true, would make my teaching jobs so much easier..... I've had students who'd make that imaginary student appear as a good candidate for a nobel laureate..... one recent college student in my neuro class asked me about 'the time when the baby comes into your belly'.... _________________ Hitler burned people like Anne Frank for being Jewish. | Jason_Harvestdancer wrote: | Another objection. This one deals with the same subject as the "secondary characteristic fallacy" but shows that the student was actually committing a different fallacy, a simple equivocation.
"Heat" has two meanings, it can refer to general thermal energy, or it can refer to an amount of thermal energy above a psychological norm as in "it is a hot day".
"Light" has two meanings, it can refer to general photonic energy, or it can refer to an amount of photonic energy above a psychological norm as in "it is really light outside".
When the student switches from dichotomy "hot and cold" to "just heat or its absence", he switches definitions.
when the student switches from dichotomy "light and dark" to "just light or its absence", he switches definitions.
Much simpler than the secondary characteristic fallacy. |
