From here:

Quote:
But Jhally of the Media Education Foundation believes Hollywood's fascination with terrorism can have serious political consequences.

"Fear has been used to paralyze people's intellects," said Jhally. "If they can scare people, almost anything becomes possible. When people are afraid their brains shut off and it makes you confused and want easy solutions."

Television shows like '24' also reinforce stereotypes about Arabs, he said, and in this episode connections are drawn between terrorism, Arabs and nuclear war. With the U.S. wrestling with Iran over its nuclear capabilities, these associations are dangerous, he said.

And Jhally's from the Media Education Foundation? Jeez...

Meh. All dem towal hedz look alik... LOLZ!!1!!one!

isn't that like asking if most New Yorkers are North American?

Quote:
An Arab (Arabic: عرب ‎; translit: ʻarab) is a member of a Semitic people originally from the Arabian peninsula and surrounding territories, who speaks Arabic, and who inhabits much of the Middle East and northern Africa.[4] However, Arabs are not a homogeneous ethnic group, and many varying views of the definition have been offered.

EDIT: did you mean "Muslim"?

No.

They speak Persian. Most Iranians are ethnically and linguistically closer to Europeans than to Arabs (who are Semitic). That's why they've traditionally drawn pictures of humans and animals where other Muslim peoples have not. Also, as I recall from college linguistics class, mother and father in various languages are (from memory, so I might be off, especially on German and Persian, but here goes...):
English: mother/father
German: Mutter/Vater
Spanish: madre/padre
Latin: mater/pater
Persian: madar/pedar

Lots of other very basic, daily-use-type words are also astoundingly similar and traceable through sound change patterns (and the same is incidentally true of Afghanistan and Pakistan, also Muslim countries with Indo-European heritage). It's a matter of pure geographical chance that Persians tend to have a Muslim heritage while Europeans tend to have a Christian heritage.

reminds me a bit of Turkey... its this weird 'in-between' country thats not quite European, bit not quiet Arab.

very interesting stuff.

Although... i cannot help but feel a deep pity of that whole area of the world. I mean, here is a large area, the cradle of civilization, that, at one time, was the pinnacle of art, science, astronomy, math and civilization... and NOW look at 'em. Sad

Yeah, well Turkey is something else entirely though - their closeness in some ways to Europeans comes from geographical proximity rather than distant ethnic association.

And ditto on the sentiment toward Iran - it's really sad that they're run by these professional cretins (not that most countries don't have their fair share, but at least a lot of countries have some semblance of a constitution to cripple the tyrants a little).

Greece has also been described as a country with a past but not much of a future.
