723 hours in. Figure head is on and mostly painted. Netting is complete except a couple on the masts later on. Quarter davits for the slung cutters is on. I still need to paint the rear details and add the lanterns. All cannon doors windows and final overall paint. Spirit sail and jib boom are on. Also about a hundred figures to paint and pose. Foremast is roughed in. It is taking shape faster than I expected! I will have to scratch build the two slung cutters and I plan on having the launch hoisted over the side. Pinnace, Barge and small cutter will be in the cradles. Anchors are assembled and puddening is complete.
Woot Wooot!

Well, all three masts are roughed out so now I know how tall she is. I also got started on the boats. Here is the Launch, which so far has about ten hours invested in it and is ready to paint. It is a miniature of the large process which is plank on plank two layers thick. What makes it tough is it has to look good on the inside as well as the outside since both are visible. The matching cutters are scratch built. They were towed behind at the battle so the Kit screwed me and didn't include them. I drafted up the plans and used a jigsaw to cut them out.

What's the update? Honestly, it looks rather stunning... May The Rick Copeland have it? _________________ “I think it’s also important for the President to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn.”

Incredible work especially for a "first kit" (though I can see by the planes hanging from the rafters you've likely been building models for a while. around my kids soccer schedules I've been hoping to get back to my modeling bench but, I don't know when that's likely,... even when they started their own kits we've found the time interrupted and their progress stalled.
I only have one criticism and it seems to be a very common one I've noted on a lot of very good models over the years,... the model looks very realistic but, the people stick out artificially. If I could make a suggestion, weather them a bit, dull down the clothing and dirty them up a bit. People in a work environment hardly ever look clean, even a model one of my friends did of a frigate entering port with sailors in whites looked much better when he weathered the sailors slightly, the difference was amazing and it was far better than his other alternative of removing every figure. |

We'll do. I haven't finished ANY of the final painting. I use pastels to dirty them up. Also the saw dust really shows up in the photos.
I'll add rust stains on the anchors, dirty up the ropes and dull coat the figures then add pastels to dirty them up and bring out the highlights. I will even add bird shit in the appropriate places. hehe
I finished the masts and added the lanterns, plus some more rigging. I'll post new photos soon.
I do make plastic kits, but the ones hanging are toys.

But one thing is missing. What's a big ship and a bunch of guys without good olde fashioned sodomy?
You should make one of your guys on the ship look like Moloth taking a photo of himself...

You left out rum and the lash, as per:
"The only traditions of the Royal Navy are rum, sodomy and the lash."
What fun is sodomy without rum and the lash to go with it? _________________ It is by caffeine alone that I set my mind in motion. It is by the Coca-Cola that the thoughts acquire speed, the teeth acquire stains, the stains become a warning. It is by caffeine alone that I set my mind in motion. |
