I think it's good quality. But it's the first kit I've owned.
What surprised me is how rigid the hull turned out. All these thin strips of wood made one rock solid hull.
Maybe your ship will inspire me to get off my ass and finish mine. |
I was surprised too. I'm allready on my fifth or sixth bottle of super glue.
I would be willing to bet I could stand on mine though. It is really tough stuff!
OOOH dude, I also found a nifty trick for planking I have never heard anyone else using. Instead of soaking the planks I use a Scunci steamer super glue and accelerator. Kicks ass. Yeah you glue yourself to the boat every few minutes....but HEY.
Finished the cannons on the upper deck. WOOT WOOT! One would be fun....30....not so much. _________________ Join http://www.sefora.org/

Well, during break I got a little more done. I fitted the quarterdeck and planked it. Still no final painting, but roughed in some more. I also got the walls finished and once again found more mistakes in the kit and instructions. I was livid. The right side view and front view are not correctly done in CAD, plus who ever checked the instructions was an idiot.
I was set back about ten hours having to tear out the bulkheads on the forecastle and the ones on the middle and poop deck are too thick if you follow the plans.
I had to drop the grating on the front by a quarter inch to make it fit and I HOPE it doesn’t throw the entire front end off…….If so I will have to tear off the front and start over. That might be a deal breaker….sigh.
Otherwise it is coming along nicely for only a few months work.

Slowly moving along. Finished the deck and pegs. A little more roughed in paint. No final details yet. 520 hours in, starting to look like a boat!

Well, got a lot more done. 553 hours in.
I got the aft 6 cannons rigged. 2 stowed, two rigged for travel and two ready to fire. I fitted the poop deck and pegged it, added the flag lockers and railings. Fitted the wheel and some other small details. Just roughed in the paint so far. I'll go over it with a fine toothed comb before I start the masts. Still a lot of work to go, but It is getting interesting finally. I made a mistake I cannot fix on the upper cannon deck. Forgot to put in a bulkhead and also located a couple hatches in the wrong place. The kit contains no information on that kind of detail. I fixed the location on the quarterdeck but they do not line up which pisses me off, but who will know but me......sigh.

I'm currently taking donations. So far I have finished a 1/1 scale wooden peg.
At this rate it might take a while. _________________ Join http://www.sefora.org/

I still have an unfinished (plastic) Tamiya model of the Missouri sitting around.
Those pictures are looking good. Now all you need is a really big bottle. _________________ ~ Let us be reasonable ~

Well, another month in, 627 hours. Added trim and details to sides, stairs to side doors, rigged all cannons but two, carronades complete. I have a few ideas for about thirty more people. A funeral on the poop deck, cannon practice on the quarterdeck, and bird cages and goats on the forecastle with sitting people plucking chickens.
I bought another awesome book on e-bay for details.
I still have final painting on the overall outside, anchors, figures and bird cages. All six boats. Davits. Nets….ummm…Still a few months to go on the ship, then the other half. Masts and rigging and 37 hand made sails. Looking at 2009 for completion….sigh.
Anyway here are a few new photos. The dust from sanding really shows up.

665 hours in. I added chain rails and deadeyes, part of the reason I haven’t finished painting it yet. So many little parts to add. I netted the hammock cranes and added railings and compass. I’m ready to vacuum off the decks, dust it, and do some final paint details. I have about a hundred figures to paint and pose, then anchors, lamps and I’ll be close to finished with the actual ship. I still have the six boats to build but will probably wait along with the cannon doors. I’ll snag those with thread and end up tearing them off during the rigging. Not too bad for a little over five months. Way ahead of the plan. A few more little mistakes I cannot fix. They sneak up on you, a freekin 1/8” off here or there and you are in big trouble. Since I followed the instructions my walls are too thick and that threw off the hammock cranes and the stairs a bit. It would take an expert on the ship to pick it out but it is all I see. Anyway, time to finally detail the top decks.

Once you finish that one. Perhaps you move on to a 1/200 scale Nimitz class. Perhaps if you are very adventurous you could make it 1/150 so it's like 8 feet long.
You could also upgrade Nimitz to that newer one they are planning. Than you could get find appropriate scale aircraft also for it. For example. Though obviously a canadian website.
Than again... perhaps you would want to make a 1/72 carrier. Though that would be 15-16 feet obviously. Kind of a large ship
Perhaps
